National Pantheon of Lisbon

The National Pantheon is a monument built in the Baroque style and houses the tombs of the most influential and important people in Portuguese history.

Located in the historic district of Santa Clara, it occupies the building originally intended to house the church of Santa Engrácia.

Built in 1568, it was completed only in 1916 after 350 years.

Between 1964 and 1966 a double concrete dome was designed, covered in lioz marble, the interior built with different types of stone was totally restored and the remains of the personalities to be honored were transferred to this place. 

Inside it houses the tombs of the main personalities of Portuguese history such as the Fado singer Amália Rodrigues, the writers João de Deus, Almeida Garrett and Guerra Junqueiro and the Presidents of the Republic Manuel de Arriaga, Teófilo Braga, Sidónio Pais and Óscar Carmona. Another important tomb is that of Eusebio, one of the greatest Portuguese footballers of all time.

On the left side of the grand entrance are the monumental tombs of Luís de Camões, Pedro Álvares Cabral and Prince D. Henrique. On the right side are those of Afonso de Albuquerque, Nuno Álvares Pereira and Vasco da Gama.

From the terrace you have a view from above of the historic area of Lisbon and the Tagus River.
