The Shrine is located at the eastern end of Montello, about 2 km from the town of Nervesa della Battaglia in the province of Treviso.
It is visible from the entire surrounding area in memory of the bloody battle of June 1918.
Designed by Felice Nori and built in 1935, it was inaugurated only in 1938 on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the battle on the Piave river.
Built with a square plan, it develops in height with a massive tower of almost 30 meters and has 4 floors inside.
On the top floor of the tower, open upwards, four large windows allow access to the outside from which you can see the entire area of the battle of Montello, bordered by the bend of the Piave river.
The remains of almost 9000 soldiers from the 120 war cemeteries scattered along the Piave during the hard, bloody battles of 1917 and 1918 rest in the Memorial. Over 3000 soldiers, however, are declared unknown soldiers.
The Shrine also houses a museum collection, with materials and testimonies on the war events between the Piave and Montello.
After the battle of Caporetto, Montello was hit by the hard fighting of the First World War, as it was located in the center of the Piave front.
It became the main objective of the Austro-Hungarian offensive that lasted until June 1918.
The 8^ Italian Army managed to contain the breakthrough, to retake Nervesa and to push the enemy back beyond the Piave.
From 24th October to 3rd November 1918 the Italian soldiers launched the final offensive on Monte Grappa and the Piave river.
The Austro-Hungarian front finally collapsed and on 4th November 1918 the Austro-Hungarian Empire signed the surrender.
