Nestled between Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, Mondello beach is famous for its white sand and is almost 1.5 km long.
Until the end of the 1800s it looked like a marshy place, after recovery and reclamation it became an elegant and lush seaside resort and summer residence of the Palermo bourgeoisie.
Mondello developed between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries around a tuna fishery dating back to 1455 and a small church dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie. The buildings were torn down in the early 1950s due to the tourist boom.
At the end of the beach, in the direction of Capo Gallo, there is the ancient fishing village, now the center of the city of Mondello.
The most characteristic establishment on the beach of Mondello is certainly the Charleston, a villa-stilt house on the sea that until 2010 housed one of the chicest restaurants in Palermo.
Easily accessible from the center of Palermo, Mondello is the main beach of the city and in the summer, it is crowded with tourists but also with many Palermo.
