St. Giles’ Cathedral – Edinburgh

St. Giles’ Cathedral is located on the historic Royal Mile, between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood.

The Cathedral was built in 1124 and was consecrated to the patron saint of lepers.

After the Reformation, the building underwent continuous renovations: currently, in fact, it is possible to recognize architectural and decorative elements from various eras.

The main remodeling works were carried out after a fire set by the English in 1385 following which, in the fifteenth century, the church was rebuilt in Gothic style.

One of the most important parts of the Cathedral is the Cardo Chapel. Built at the behest of the Knights of the Order of the Thistle between 1909 and 1911, this chapel was built in Gothic style.

Although it is known as the Cathedral of Edinburgh, in reality this church cannot boast this title as it is not a bishopric.
