Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate – Monaco

The Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate is located in the area of the Rock, near the Prince’s Palace.

The current cathedral is located on the site of the first church built in 1252 and dedicated to its patron saint St. Nicholas. It was demolished in 1874 after the split with the diocese of Nice.

The Cathedral was built from 1875 to 1903 and was consecrated in 1911.

Built in Romanesque-Byzantine style with white stones typical of the area, its interior has 3 naves and in the altar area there is the episcopal throne in white Carrara marble.

In the altar area are the tombs of the rulers of the Grimaldi family such as Albert I of Monaco (first Prince of Monaco) and Rainier III of Monaco (father of the current ruler). Another very important tomb is that of Grace Kelly (American actress and Princess of Monaco)

The great liturgical festivities take place in the Cathedral, the feast of Saint Devota (27 January) and the National Day (19 November).
