This monument was built in 1978 on the historic Chadar Moglia hill and is dedicated to the defenders of Stara Zagora.
It was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle for Stara Zagora, one of the major battles of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78.
The Battle of Stara Zagora led to the liberation of Bulgaria after 500 years of Ottoman rule.
The figures of six volunteers and a Russian officer are in endless vigil in front of the flag, a symbol of the insurmountable barrier in front of the enemy hordes of Suleiman Pasha and the six regiments of volunteers, thus giving rise to the future Bulgarian army.
100 steps lead to a 50-meter-high concrete structure that symbolizes the waving of the “Samara flag”.
The flag was handed over to the Bulgarian volunteers by the citizens of the Russian city of Samara.
The Monument to the Defenders of Stara Zagora is included in the list of 100 National Tourist Sites.
