The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is the largest preserved underground cistern in Istanbul.
It was built in 532 by Emperor Justinian I.
Today it looks like a huge underground space of about 140 by 70 meters, in which there are twelve rows of 28 columns 9 meters high.
The Basilica Cistern appears in the final stages of Dan Brown’s movie “Inferno“.
