The fortress, also known as Kale of Skopje, is considered to have been populated since the Neolithic period and the early Bronze Age.
The fortress itself dates back to the time of Emperor Justinian I (535) .
Today the Skopje fortress is one of the most visited monuments in the capital.
On the left side of the Vardar, crossing the Stone Bridge is the Old Bazaar of Skopje. It represents a part of the city with a rich and varied history, tradition, culture and architecture.
The Old Bazaar which dates back to the 12th century, represents an economic-commercial, architectural, cultural and traditional complex.
It is built in an oriental style, with some wider streets, but most of them are narrow and paved.
The Old Bazaar of Skopje is the largest bazaar in the Balkans except for the one in Istanbul.
The Bazaar is also the center of typical restaurants offering different traditional dishes.
