Limone sul Garda is located on the Brescia side of Lake Garda and has the appearance of an ancient village, among the best preserved in the whole region, but until 1930 the country was not considered a tourist destination due to the lack of many connections with other cities.
Although the name ‘Limone sul Garda’ suggests what is the typical product of the place, in reality the name is given by the etymology of the name in the Latin ‘limen’ which literally means border.
Limone sul Garda also has a typical feature of the surrounding areas: its lemon groves, second in value only to those of the Amalfi Coast.
The town bases part of its tourism on the beauty of its lemon groves that are located at the northernmost point where there are citrus crops.
The most important are those of the Limonaia del Castel, an ancient wooden and stone greenhouse that still has the function of protecting lemon and other citrus trees from the cold winter winds. In ancient times this lemon house was the economic reference point for the entire Brescia side of Lake Garda (which was distinguished from the Veronese one by the presence of these citrus fruits) arriving, especially during the 1700s, to export lemons throughout Northern Europe.
Limone sul Garda also has a small marina and the lakefront where there are many restaurants and shops selling the typical products of the area.
