Novi Sad is a characteristic city of Serbia that, until not long ago, was unknown to most and definitely little visited.
Over the last few years, Novi Sad has become increasingly known and frequented becoming an important industrial and cultural center of the country.
The area of Novi Sad was inhabited since 4,500 BC. and, in the first century BC. the Romans founded a city that during the fifth century BC. was first sacked and then demolished by the Huns.
The latter were succeeded by the Ostrogoths, the Franks, the Byzantines, until between the tenth and twelfth centuries, it became part of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The most important monument is the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Name of Mary. This church is the most important and the oldest church in Novi Sad and stands in the center of the main square of the city, Freedom Square.
The construction of the Church of Santa Maria was completed in 1893 while the bell tower was finished a year later, in 1894.
It dominates with its 76 meters the entire city of Novi Sad.
