The Bra Square is the largest square in Verona.
It owes its name to the term “braida” which in Lombard language means wide.
In Bra Square there are many monuments from different eras:
- Verona Arena
- Palace of the Gran Guardia
- Barbieri Palace
The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheater from the 1st century AD. During the summer, the Arenian Opera Festival is held inside it, inaugurated in 1913 with GiuseppeVerdi’s Aida.
The “Palazzo della Grand Guardia”, from the Venetian era, was built in 1610 butfinished in 1853.
Barbieri Palace is a neoclassical style building designed in 1836 and finished in 1848. Since 1861 the Palace has been the seat of the Municipality of Verona.
In Piazza Bra there is also the Liston, a wide sidewalk with many bars and restaurants. With Mazzini Street (the shopping street) it is the traditional walking place of the Veronese people in the weekend.
