It is one of the most famous squares in Berlin, as well as the largest. The square in the medieval period was used as a market for livestock.
It owes its name to Tsar Alexander I, who visited the city in 1805 when Berlin was still the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia.
At the end of the Second World War, the square was rebuilt in the style of Soviet architectural culture. The square was in fact located during the Cold War in East Berlin.
In Alexanderplatz, in the seventies, many buildings were built including the former Centrum Warenhaus, one of the main department stores in East Berlin, now occupied by the Kaufhof Group.
On Alexanderplatz there are also three famous monuments of Berlin: the Fernsehturm, Weltzeituhr and the Brunnen der Volkerfreundschaft.
The Fernsehturm, also called Tele-spargel, is the tallest building in the whole city with its 365 meters. Its appearance is also famous for the large sphere, inside it there is a panoramic bar. From the top of the tower you can enjoy the best view of Berlin, with a 360° view.
The Weltzeituhr, Germany’s most famous watch, marks the time of the whole world and the Brunnen der Volkerfreundschaft, the Fountain of Friendship between Peoples.
