Kobarid Museum

Kobarid museum is located in the center of the city and with a complete itinerary, all the events that occurred on the Isonzo front during the First World War are explained.

The most important part of the exhibition is dedicated to the fighting of the Twelfth offensive on the Soča River, known as the “Battle of Caporetto”. 

The clash of hundreds of thousands of soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies began on 24th October 1917 on the Isonzo river and ended 17 days later on the banks of the Piave.

Museum is divided into three floors, a documentary on the Battle of Caporetto is shown on the ground floor and there are also rooms for temporary exhibitions.

On the first floor, the history of Kobarid and its surroundings is illustrated, from ancient times to the present day. 

Going up to the second floor there is a large room with a model of the upper Soča valley, where the positions of the armies are marked on 23th October 1917, on the eve of the decisive battle.

On the second floor, different types of weapons, uniforms and mementos of the soldiers deployed on this war front are also exhibited.

In recognition of its contribution to Europe’s cultural heritage, the museum was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize.
