The Château de Carcassonne was built in the thirteenth century, probably after the Treaty of Paris in 1229.
Built by the Trencavel family, Viscounts of Carcassonne, the castle has undergone numerous changes over the centuries.
The goal was to fortify it as much as possible to make it impregnable.
The castle has 9 towers including the Pint tower, a square watchtower.
The ramparts consist of a double enclosure, part of which dates back to the Gallo-Roman era.
The western side of the Castle, against which the palace is built, is defended by a watchtower.
Inside there are frescoed ceilings and a vast collection of artifacts from the Gothic and Romanesque periods.
