An important site in the Côte de Nuits, in Burgundy, the Château du Clos de Vougeot is the cradle of Burgundian viticulture and has one of the oldest wineries in France.
The story dates back to 1098, when the monks of the Abbey of Citeaux decided to build buildings for the wine industry.
These were surrounded by plots of vines bordered by a 3 km long wall, thus giving the estate the name “Clos” (fence).
The main building in Renaissance style was added in the sixteenth century.
Inside the castle, there is the twelfth-century wine cellar, where four huge oak presses remain.
In addition, the famous castle has been home to the famous Brotherhood of the Chevaliers du Tastevin since 1934, whose mission is to promote Burgundy through its traditions, its gastronomy.
In 1949 the castle was officially classified as a Historic Monument.
The Château du Clos de Vougeot is an unmissable historical stop on the Route des Grands Crus.
